On a cool, crisp September 13th morning, Merv & Sandy headed down the Coquihalla Highway in their Mercedes camperized Sprinter van (advertisement on wheels), for another adventure. The Othello tunnels are near Hope, BC and are part of the former Kettle Valley Railway. On this occasion, 2 of the 4 tunnels were closed off due to structural damage of a bridge weakened by water erosion.
Ken Crisp with his ornate ‘homemade’ and very colourful train engine as a prop, shared the calling with Merv Meyer of Kamloops. Two squares of enthusiastic energetic dancers square danced in the tunnels, with Betty & George Langtry dressed in their ‘train’ attire taking photos. They did a lot of the organizing of this wonderful event.
There were lots of onlookers. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment. Even some tourists from South America joined us.
After dancing in the tunnels, everyone headed back to the ‘campsite’ where after a hotdog lunch, some more square dancing took place on the grass nearby. Then everyone visited or wandered around (or rested) until a wonderful potluck dinner took place at 6:00 pm. This included lots of beautifully cooked fresh salmon, salads, pies, fresh fruits and even a home-grown watermelon from the Meyer’s garden.
The weather was perfect all day and we headed back home from yet another wonderful outing that our healthy recreation leads us to.
